Vincent van Gogh, 1853-90

Wander the Dutch painter’s landscapes and nightscapes, and explore his portraits and still life paintings.

The Old Vineyard and Landscape van Gogh bag is a two-toted masterpiece. It features Old Vineyard with Peasant Woman and Landscape with Houses. These are two of van Gogh’s blue hued works. Both depict rustic scenes in Southern France on a sleepy afternoon. He in fact moved to Arles in search of vibrant colors and fresh inspiration. The light and the colors of southern France reminded him of the moods in his Japanese prints. He began painting the local flowers, blooming trees, and landscapes with newfound energy. Notice the soft angles, and the swirling, wave-like outlines.

“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”

For the painting Self Portrait with Straw Hatthe infamous artist becomes his own model. We look and he stares back with one blue and one green eye. Sketchy with faded purple strokes, this painting gives the onlooker an insight into the painter’s self-image.

Sunflowers and van Gogh. Are they synonymous? Be transported to the South of France with the vibrant yellow-almost-golden brushstrokes. Go yellow on yellow with the van Gogh Sunflowers bag. These flowers are not polished or refined. Instead they possess the strong, rustic air of the countryside.

Sunflowers and van Gogh. Are they synonymous? Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers is a series of still life paintings. He introduced new pigments into his palette to create the vibrant yellow-almost-golden brushstrokes. Go yellow on yellow with the van Gogh Sunflowers bag. These flowers are not polished or refined. Instead, they possess the strong, rustic air of the countryside. Van Gogh later decided to use the sunflower as his signature symbol, writing to his brother Theo in a letter in 1889 “the sunflower is mine, in a way”.

Follow through with floral when you tote up with the Almond Blossom bag. It’s a fresh bundle of April blossoms on a light-as-clouds blue background. Not a still life, but a spring bloom, this depiction by van Gogh is inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e artists. Almond Blossom is an iconic image of spring and of the new beginnings which this season brings. Van Gogh had a special affinity for blossoming trees. To the artist, they reflected the beauty of nature and represented revival and the hope of new life. The painting is unlike any other of the artist’s paintings; the almond branches seem to be floating in the dreamy blue cloud and the shadows and strokes resemble the much-admired Japanese woodblock prints and floral studies of Hokusai.

“I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart.”

Vincent van Gogh

These are visually arresting paintings. Van Gogh was a constant seeker when it came to ways to improve and diversify his painting style. Each is a picturesque celebration of nature in van Gogh’s signature style – accompanied by the expected emotional intensity.

Feast your eyes on van Gogh’s masterpieces at the renowned Van Gogh Museum and carry your passion for art with you wherever you go with your van Gogh bag.
